close view to archaeological sight of Kolona in the harbour of Aegina, in Aegina island, in the Saronnic gulf, Greece


"Kolona" (pillar) is a significant archaeological site, where the Acropolis of ancient Aegina city was located. It is situated on the left side of the harbour of Aegina and was the religious and political center of the area. It's only pillar which stands till now is the only remain from the Apollo temple. The area has been first inhabited since prehistoric times, about 3500 during the Copper era. The ancient settlement although protected by a wall, was destroyed about ten times in the near future and was re-built. The northern walls built in around 1600 , have been saved along with some ruins that dated back to 1300 In the southern part are found remains of some Byzantine buildings and priests' residences
