Water vole (Arvicola terrestris) on vegetation mat in stream.

The water vole is probably the most endangered mammal in the UK. Formerly very common, a massive decline has been attributed to an introduced predator, the American Mink (Mustela vison). The water vole is well known as 'Ratty' in Kenneth Graham's Wind in the Willows.
