The Treaty of Waitangi made between the Maori and British representatives on Feb 6, 1840 was the key document in founding New Zealand. Ignored for many years, in the 1970s it became a basis for the Waitangi Tribunal, which attempts to redress the various ways in which the government has not respected the terms of the treaty. Waitangi day, Feb 6, is now celebrated as the national day of New Zealand, and for some years, Kiwis in London have celebrated with a pub crawl along the Circle Line on the nearest Saturday, starting early in the day at Paddington and alighting at each station to find a pub before continuing on the journey. The highlight of the event (which grinds to a halt by Temple station, if not before, at around 6pm) is a noisy Haka in Parliament Square. This year's celebration was attended by between 5 and 8,000 mainly young Kiwis. The future of the Circle Line Pub Crawl is in doubt following the ban by new London Mayor Boris Johnson, although it already ignores a ban on drinking alcohol in Parliament Square.
