The marble Naxian Sphinx which dominated the Apollo's sanctuary is found in Delphi museum, in Fokida region, central Greece


Made of white marble the sphinx statue, an offering from the people of Naxos, dominated Apollo's sanctuary with its huge size. This mythical creature has the body and legs of a lion, the chest and wings of a bird and the head of a woman with the typical archaic smile on her face. It is a representative example of Naxian sculpture and statuery of the 6th century BC. The inscription on the base bestowing the Naxians with the right to have priority to the Delphic oracle.
