Early instars of Alder Moth (Acronicta alni) lava bear a remarkable resemblance to bird droppings. Later instars have highly visible yellow and black warning stripes. Both these strategies allow the caterpillar to feed openly on the upper surface of leaves, in this case those of a blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum). Bedgebury Forest, Hawkhurst, Kent. UK.
