Dogfish eye. Light micrograph of a transverse section through an eye in a young lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula). The dogfish eye has eyelids, but only for protection. It has a cornea (black) but no conjunctiva. The lens of the eye is spherical (centre) and hard and is suspended by a gelatinous zonule. The dogfish's eye is adapted for near vision in dim light. On the ventral side of the lens is the protractor lenitis muscle (not seen), which acts to move the lens away from the retina when accommodation for near vision is required. Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
