Cristin withy bed, Bardsey Island, Gwynedd: osiers & other willows growing in the wet ground are cut regularly to provide withies for baskets etc.

Cristin withy bed, Bardsey Island: osiers & other willows growing in the wet ground are cut regularly to provide withies - tough flexible branches - used for tying, binding, basketry & making lobster pots etc. Artist & writer Brenda Chamberlain lived on Bardsey 1947-61, mainly in Carreg farmhouse; she described her experiences in the book Tide-race published in 1962. Mist nets are placed in the withy bed to catch birds so they may be ringed and studied.
