Never forming exclusive tracts of forestof any size, it is scattered in open groveswhere conditions favor its development, andmany of the slopes and ridges which overlookthe lakes of the Adirondacks and New Englandare beautified by the presence of this straight columnar trunks, rarely over 2or .3 ft. in diameter, are vested in a reddislibrown bark (hence the name) fissured intobroad irregular plates and ridges which flakeoff in irregular scales.
