'The Eternal Indian,' also known as the 'Black Hawk Statue,' is a 48-foot-high statue by famed sculptor Larado Taft from 1908-11. The statue towers above the area in Lowden State Park sitting on a bluff overlooking the Rock River. The statue, according to Taft, represents the unconquerable spirit of Native Americans, using motifs from several tribal cultures. While not a poor portrait statue, it was in part inspired by the life of Black Hawk (1767–1838), a leader and warrior of the Sauk tribe, native to the area. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A man visiting the statue and reading of its history provides a sense of scale to the massive work.
