Tourist and tour boats outside the entrance to Sun So Cave (Cave of Surprises), Ha Long Bay, north Vietnam

Towering limestone karst formations rise out of the turquoise waters at Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the coast of northern Vietnam. Ha Long means 'where the dragon descends into the sea' and its a great place to take a boat cruise among the ~2000 islands. The marine ecosystem of the bay is very diverse and it is heavily fished for squid, shrimp and other mollusks, and for hundreds of species of fish, by fishermen who live in floating villages and go out daily in small traditional design fishing boats. Sung Sot Cave (Cave of Surprises) on Bo Hon island, is an excellent example of an old phreatic cave, formed over 500 million years of tectonic and uplifting activity in the limestone rocks, with periods of marine transgression and regression. A variety of launches and smaller boats bring tourists from the tour boats to the wharf by the cave entrance.
