View ESE of the Pilgrims' Way passing St Martha's on the Hill, Chilworth, Surrey, England, UK: a C12th Norman church rebuilt 1848-50 by Henry Woodyer. The church is cruciform in plan with a central crossing tower; C12th remains are incorporated within the Victorian building. The Southern Route of the Pilgrims' Way (now part of the North Downs Way) carrying pilgrims from Winchester (Hampshire) to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral (Kent), crosses the hill from E-W just N of the church. Martha of Bethany is a biblical figure, the sister of Lazarus, but there is a tradition of 600 Christians being killed on the hill in Saxon times & St Martyrs becoming St Martha's.
