The tendency of the pipe being to bendm any direction when power is applied, asmall roller is fixed in the top part of theframe of the carrier, to hold the pipe in thegroove in the lower wheel. As the lowerwheel has to carry the weight of the pipe, llie bearing seldom comes against the upper the ones now used in all new work. With the Evans carrier (seenin Fig. 2), the bearings of this upperwheel are also made anti-frictional, a rodbeing slipped through the top part of theframe to tie the several parts together, which, in this pattern, have to be madein separate pieces, to allow the wheels tobe put in their proper places. The carrier, for this reason, is somewhat more trouble-some to put in, two lag screws beingneeded for each section of the frame, andit is also more troublesome to work with, owing to the difficulty of moving any ofthe wheels, as is so often desirable in re-pairing or putting in any new parts, whilethe advantages gained by using the anti- friction roller on top seem to be veryslight. Pipe carriers are usuall)- spaced 8 ft. apartand are fastened to foundations which areburied in the ground. On som
