A late 19th Century portrait of James Abram Garfield (1831-1881) was the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881 until his assassination later that year. A lawyer and Civil War military officer, Garfield had served nine terms in the House of Representatives. Just before his candidacy for the White House, he had been elected to a Senate seat, which he declined as president-elect.
