The lower part of the trunk dies early and the tree is then supported by a number of branching aerial roots, standing as it were on stilts. Leaves thick, stipules large, deciduous, enclos- ing the buds. PL on few-fid. cymes, calyx divided into 4 segments, persistent and enlarged in anthers 8-12, nearly sessile, with, numerous cells. Ovary half-inferior, 2-celled, 2 ovules in each cell.
