Editorial use only Testing mail packets for illegal drugs. US federal laboratory worker preparing a sample for a trace detector used to detect explosives and narcotics (illegal drugs) in postal packages sent from abroad to the USA. This detector uses ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). More than 340 million mail packages are sent to the USA every year, with workers from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) playing a critical role to detect counterfeit, unapproved or dangerous products. Photographed on 5 March 2018, at the International Mail Facility in New York, USA.
