St Peter's Church Sunderland one of the many recovered gravestones laid against the outer site walls of the church

The site around the church was used to drop ballast from the many ships arriving in ballast to pick up cargo's of coal, glass and other manufactured or raw materials. When the site was levelled and raised many of the gravestones were lifted and placed against the outer wall of the site or in some cases laid as paving. Saved were probably those stones most readable, they reflect family history and that of visitors who were unfortunate enough to die while in the port. The site is now being further developed to reflect the long history of the area especially that of the Venerable Bede who lived at Wearmouth monastery.
