Richard Pynson (1448-1529), English printer. Pynson was one of the earliest printers of books in England, and considered among the best of his time. He was born in Normandy and began his printing career in around 1492. Working in London, in 1506 he was appointed to the lifetime position of King's Printer. He printed over 500 books, including religious works and classical plays. His specialities included law texts, such as the King's statutes. He also printed King Henry VIII's theological treatise 'Defence of the Seven Sacraments' (1521). Artwork from 'Typographical antiquities' (1785-90) by English antiquarian Joseph Ames (1689-1759).
