Returning from this Expedition exhausted by thestrain of my ice-cap journey, and, as I now appreciate,not myself physically or mentally, I felt as if myArctic efforts were ended, and the fact that therewere two well-equipped expeditions still in the field,with a good chance of accomplishing their objects,made me feel as if my life-work had been a failure. There were still some unfinished threads of mywork to be knotted, before I loosened my grasp uponit and turned my eyes away from my dream,—threadswhich my struggle for something more important hadleft me no time to attend to.
