Duke of Wellington. Historical engraving of Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), British general, first Duke of Wellington, statesman and twice prime minister. Wellesley is best known as the general who finally defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo in 1815. After Waterloo he went to head the allied army that occupied France. Later, in 1827 and again in 1842, he became commander in chief of the British army. Although Wellesley was on board the first ever passenger train, he believed that the railway would only be a passing fad.
