This is a wooden beacon situated on Plymouth Hoe, where in the background Smeaton's Tower lighthouse is obscured by an early morning sea fog; exactly the conditions for which it was orginally intended when it was erected on the Eddystone Rocks some fourteen miles to the south west of Plymouth. It was dismantled block by block to be erected as a monument on Plymouth Hoe, being replaced by the now current lighthouse.
