Roger Balian (born 1933), French-Armenian physicist, at a 'Speed Science' event organised to allow 100 young people to meet a range of eminent French scientists. Balian's research has included quantum thermodynamics and statistical physics. He has also worked on electromagnetic wave propagation, signal theory, and the distribution of galaxies. The Balian-Low theorem in Fourier analysis is named for him. He was elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1995.
