Betsiboka estuary, Madagascar. Optical image of Betsiboka estuary taken from the International Space Station (ISS) after the tropical cyclone Gafilo. 20th century deforestation has resulted in massive soil erosion, causing the waters to run red from soil washed down by the heavy rains. This has led to extensive sedimentation in the river, impeding and preventing the passage of ships.
