The revised reading lessens, but does not fully removethe obscurity. Some interpret it: give with loving hearts what is in your cups as alms, and your outside ceremonialpurification will be superfluous; all thingswill be clean to you. The meaning maybe even stronger, as turning upon theGreek word for alms: you Phariseestithe mint, anise, and outward things, butif you will rather give £/lf??/zo<Ttv;/v, mercy,compassion (alms from the heart), thethings (the graces), that are within, evenbehold, all things are clean to you.
