This brilliantly yellow, waxy flower grows on the prickly pear cactus plant. The scientific name is opuntia in the cactaceae or cactus family. The plant is distinguished by its flat, green pads and clusters of spines. The flowers appear in the early spring in the desert, usually abundant in March, April and sometimes into May.
