This is an emission nebula, a huge cloud of gas and dust that glows as the hydrogen it contains is ionised by radiation from the hot young stars that have formed within it. Towards bottom left is the largest and most luminous star known, Eta Carinae. The Eta Carinae Nebula is around 10,000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Carina. This image covers an area of 5180 light years and was taken by the metres telescope at La Silla, Chile.
