Slipped disc. Artwork showing a slipped disc (orange) in a woman's back. This condition is where one of the intervertebral discs (grey) in the backbone ruptures. These discs are located between and cushion the vertebrae (white), the blocks of bone that form the backbone. When one of these discs ruptures, the fluid and displaced tissue can put pressure on the nearby nerves, causing pain. Here, one of the intervertebral discs in the lower back (lumbar region) has ruptured. The condition usually gets better with rest, but in severe cases surgery may be needed.
