Areca catechu is a species of palm found in some tropical countries in Oceania and East Africa. Its nut is widely used for medicinal use. It is believed to have its origins in Malaysia or the Philippines. The name Areca comes from its name on the coast of Malabar, India, and catechu is its name of Malay origin. This palm tree is erroneously called betel, as its nut is usually chewed along with the leaves of the Piper betle, a plant of the piperaceae family.
