A barge, named the LadyAlice, was taken in sections, besidestwo other boats, with a perfect equip-ment. When all preparations had beencompleted, and the farewell dinnerseaten, Stanley left England, to beginhis perilous journey, on the 15 th ofAugust, 1874. He reached Zanzibar September 21st,1874, and there found many formerassociates of his search for Doctor Liv-ingstone. He engaged quite a littlearmy of followers to go with him andcarry the outfit. This outfit, whichconsisted of a most miscellaneous col-lection of articles, weighed 18,000pounds, and was, with the party, car-ried across to the continent from Zanzi-bar island in six Arab vessels.
