Egyptian Great Sphinx, artwork. This statue of a mythical creature has the face of a man and the body of a lion. It was built at the Giza Necropolis, Egypt, in the 26th century BC, and was carved from limestone. It is shown here with the head-dress and false beard worn by the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt for whom it was built. Between its paws is a statue of a pharaoh. The Great Sphinx, one of the world's largest statues, is 73 metres long, 19 metres wide, and 20 metres high.
