DAN KATSANI VILLAGE, NEAR KONNI, NIGER, 26th JULY 2010: Gado May, 60, (left) chief of farmers in the village, with Abdula Gebe, 65,. Gado said,"We have nothing in the grain stores. In order to purchase food we now have to either borrow money from money lenders or pay the farmers in labour. We often end up in indentured at the end of the season and if we can't pay they take up 10% of our crop." The day rate for farm work, usually carried out by children, from 6am to 5 pm, is 1,000 CFA ( £) . Families use the money to buy food in Illela market on the Nigerian border. This year the price of millet has gone up from 21,000 CFA to 25,000 CFA per 56 KG sack. Photo by Mike Goldwater / Christian Aid
