Deposits in Oriente Province Representative Mines and Prospects in District Near Santiago The deposits of manganese ore examined in the Santiago district com-prise the Ponupo group, the Ysabehta, Botsford, Boston, Pilar, Dolores,Laura, San Andreas, Cauto (Abundancia), Llave, and Gloria mines, andthe Caridad and Valle prospects. The Ponupo, Ysabelita, and Boston mineswere opened many years ago and have produced a large quantity of Ponupo and Ysabelita are still relatively large producers, thoughthe grade of ore is not so high as in the earlier days. Dolores Mine.—^The Dolores mine is situated at Laura station onthe Guantanamo & Western Railroad about 13^ mi. ( km.) west ofSabanilla and is operated by the Campania Oriental de Minas, of Havanaand Santiago de Cuba. The manganese-ore deposits lie near the base ofthe south slope of a gently rising hill at a barometric altitude of between425 and 475 ft.
