Metal marker outlining history Cheyenne's Street Railway (horse-drawn trolleys), Lincolway at Capitol Ave, Cheyenne, Wyoming, US

An information sign entitled 'Cheyenne's Street Railway - The Trolleys (1887-1924)'. The Cheyenne Street Railway was organised in 1886, when Wyoming was still a Territory. By April 1887 two separate railway companies had consolidated into one and the City had issued a permit to lay tracks. Mayor Charles Riner granted the permit over the objections of some residents, who complained about the noise caused by the trolley bells. In August 1887 a contract was given to the Cheyenne Carriage Company for four 30-passenger, horse-drawn cars, at a cost of $1000 each. These were locally built as several large carriage manufacturers had suffered recent fires. In January 1888 the first horse-drawn trolley service ran on light rail tracks and operated out of the Abney Livery Stable (Lincolnway between Capitol Avenue and Central Avenue). The trolleys were brightly painted in the colours of three trolley lines (Red Line, Yellow Line, Green Line), serving different areas of Cheyenne.
