The flowers of this group of plants are toore or less conspicuously two-lipped. The number is large, many being omitted here. A few are commercially important, though a majority belong with the less common herbs. Mint, Sage and Thyme are largely grown by Philadelphia market men. This herb (the Spearmint of the meadows, or a slightly improved type) is now an important thing in under-glass work. It is in demand all winter and also in early spring, and its use is apparently increasing. The seedsmen are now prepared to answer calls for it. It is grown from root- cuttings. It is a perennial, but requires Sage is a perennial herb grown in large commercial quantities. Its culture is simple and easy. There are several varieties on the market, variously named, as Common, Red, Purple, etc. It may be bought as seeds or as young plants. The plants should be set about two feet apart, to give room for development. The leaves are dried and used for flavor- ing, for which purpose it is unexcelled. 129.
