Alead covered cable conveys the current to cer-tain points, at more or less distances apart, ac-cording to necessity, where the current iscommunicated to the trolley board, 16 feet long, running lengthwise way of the car. Our illus-tration shows roughly the method used. Asliding trolley, as we may call it, is hung fromthe trucks of the car. This trolley is 16 feetlong, and built substantially, with a thin sheetof copper on the upper surface, which collectsthe current from the contact switches placedat intervals of twelve feet, and conveys it tothe motors through wires run in the trolleysupport. This contact switch is illustratedabove. The current is fed from the cablethrough an insulated tube to the two S shap-ed lips that are permanently fixed to the cen-ter shaft. Being held in position by gravity, no currentis flowing through the brush unless a car is passing. As the car passes, the trolley tilts the brush, as shownin our illustration, when its upper terminal makes contact. CONTACT PIECE. inventor intends to fill this cup with oil, in order to obvi-ate flashing and electrolysis. The brush is 5 inches longand made of copper. As the car alwaysstops in contact, perfectly sure starting issecured. When going at high speed, thetrolley slides from one brush to another withgreat rapiditj^ always, however, maintaininga closed circuit. When going ten miles anhour, the slide passes a switch every second;but the fields of the motor being saturated, and as the momentum of the car assists loco-motion, there is less demand for current. Since the cable carrying the current is highlyinsulated, the inventor claims that 1,000 to5,000 volts may be used, thereby greatly re-ducing the cost of copper and lessening theliability of burn-outs from heavy switches are hung midway between oron the conduit yokes, while the feed cable isin most underground systems strung alongthe side. Man-holes are arranged at everyswitch for convenience of i
