. Obstetrics: the science and the art. 104 THE EXTEENAL ORGANS. tlie corpus spongiosum lead tlie blood from tlie bulb of tlie male out-Avards to tbe glans penis at the extremity of tbe corpora In Fig. 35 is represented tlie arcli of tlie pubis and its sym-pbysis, on whicli is seen the clitoris, bent downwards at an acuteangle. Beneath the crown of the arch, and on each crus, is lying abulb a of the vestibule, from each of which, on the right and theleft, is seen mounting upwards the network or plexus of bloodves-sels e that conduct the blood of the bulbs into the glans of the clitoris/. If these bulbs become turgid with blood, and then are subjectedto pressure by the constrictor muscle c underneath which they lie,the blood is forced by jets through the pars intermedia up into theglans, which becoming thus erected, the erotic life is strongly deve-loped in it, and so communicated to the reproductive system. Fig. 202. Fig. 36 is a three-quarter view of the same structure. It par-ticularly illustrates the nature, proportions, and place of the rightbulbus vestibuli, a, with its pars intermedia cas con-nected with the glans of the clitoris. Dr. Kobelt remarks, that if oneexamines these textures in a dead body, they do not seem obvious tothe research, and that though the orificium vaginae is surprisinglydilatable; but, if matter of injection be first thrown in so as to fillall the vessels of the external genitalia, the bulbs become so filledand distended, that it is difficult even to pass the finger through theOS externum, so tightly is it embraced by the distended masses ofthe bulbs. I trust that the illustrations now set before the Student, will assist him to understand all these points sufficiently to give THE EXTERNAL OEG-ANS. 105
