Engraving of Union Brigadier General Edward Dickinson Baker (February 24, 1811 – October 21, 1861), an English-born American politician, lawyer, and military leader. Baker served in the House of Representatives from Illinois and later as a Senator from Oregon. A long-time close friend of President Abraham Lincoln, Baker served as Army colonel during both the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. He was killed in the Battle of Ball's Bluff, becoming the only sitting senator to be killed in the Civil War. Original engraving by John Buttre, circa 1866.
