Guilin, China - August 1981; In 1981, when I took this shot of a squatting ethnic woman holding her baby in a Guilin market, China was just opening up again after decades of turmoil, and the horrific Cultural Revolution. It is likely, therefore, that this woman had never before seen a laowai (old foreign devil) like me. Hence her surprise, I My abiding memory of that walk - aside from this image - is stopping momentarily to change my camera film, and seeing a crowd of hundreds - polite and silent - gathering to watch what I was up to.
