The Romans told of a Vestal Virgin named Tarpeia who had betrayed her people, the Romans, and helping the neighboring Sabines to enter Rome. With no love for traitors, the Sabines did as they promised: to give Tarpeia as a reward what they had on their arms. While Tarpeia wanted their gold bracelets, the Sabines gave her their shields and killed her. The Rock was then given the name Tarpeian Rock and convicted criminals were hurled to their death from it. This illustration is taken from Lays of Ancient Rome by Lord Macaulay, who died in 1859.
