The parents cameto America in 1862 and they were residents of Iowa at the time oftheir death. Ole Nelson was reared and educated in his nativeland and on the 29th of July, 1861, a few months prior to his twenty-first birthday anniversary, he arrived in the United States. Fromthe national metropolis he forthwith made his way to Wisconsin,where he obtained employment at farm work. On the 19th of thefollowing November, however, he subordinated all else to tenderhis aid in defense of the Union—an action that shall ever reflecthonor upon his name and memory. He enlisted as a private in. In the battleof Stone River he received a severe gunshot wound in his leftleg, and the injury so incapacitated him that he was given an hon-orable discharge, at Nashville, Tennessee. After recovering fromhis injury Mr. Nelson went to Jasper county, Illinois, and soonafterward he gave evidence of his unabated loyalty and militaryardor by enlisting in Company I, 143rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry,with rank of corporal.
