Houses on the north shore of the Port of Mao (Mahon), Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain overlook the many boats moored nearby.
On the north shore of the Port of Mao (Mahon), Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain are numerous picturesque inlets and bays where many leisure boats, yachts and power boats are moored. Modern and traditional houses along the shoreline overlook the deep natural harbour that has protected the Menorcan capital throughout its history. You cannot separate Mao from its harbour - without it, the city would not be there. The harbour is the reason why the great powers fought over Menorca for so long, it is the reason why the British moved the capital to Mao in 1772. The best way to arrive in Mao is by boat, sailing into the harbour past its various islands and watching as the city appears.
