Middlelirook /EST STREET, LOOKING WEST, OURBAT and scarcely a third of the number which used to occurtwenty-five years ago. The Observatory is in 2 h. 4 m. East Longitude fromGreenwich, and in 29° 50 47 South Latitude, and the timekept all over the Colony is Durban Observatory mean time,which is 2 hours 4 minutes in advance of Greenwich time. On the slope of the Berea, below the Observatory, are theGovernment Laboratories and Assay Furnaces, where thereare carried out all the chemical anal}ses and assays requiredfor use in the various Government Departments, the mostimportant being those connected with the Administration ofJustice, the Department of Mines, and the examination of thevarious powerful high explosives passing through the Customs.
