Belalcázar Statue in Cali, Colombia. Sebastián de Belalcázar was a Spanish conquistador. Cali, Departamento Valle del Cauca, Colombia, Latin America, South America A bronze statue inaugurated to commemorate Cali's four hundredth anniversary. It is almost five hundred years since the Spanish conquistador, Sebastián de Belalcázar, founded the city of Cali, on July 25th, 1536. In order to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of this important date, the authorities in Cali decided to erect a monument to pay tribute to this famous explorer, one of the historic names in Colombia’s history. They erected a large statue made of cast bronze in which Belalcázar is standing, his right hand pointing towards the Pacific Ocean and his left hand holding the Tizona sword. The statue is on a pedestal which displays the city’s coat of arms, and is positioned on a viewpoint with beautiful views out over the city. The statue was created by the Spanish sculptor Victorio Macho and was inaugurated in Cali in June 1937.
