In 1900 there were in continentalUnited States 1,157 incorporated urban centers with4,000 or more inhabitants. Of these, 1,002 were pro-vided in 1902 with telephone systems of some descrip-tion. In 137 of these towns the service was controlledby companies operating independently of the Amer-ican Telephone and Telegraph Company, while in 414the system was in the hands of that company, and in451 telephone service was offered both by the Amer-ican Telephone and Telegraph system and by anindependent one.
