It is in N. lat. 14° 36, by E. long., 20° city was founded in 1571. The present fortifications andthe walls and battlements of the old city were built by Chineselabor in 1590, in the time of Governor-General Gomez PerezDasmarihas. The old city is almost surrounded by water. On the north isthe Pasig ; on the west the sea; while moats flank the other twosides. These moats are connected with the river by sluices ;but they are sadly in need of repair, and are filled with stagnantwater and putrid matter,—a continual menace to the health ofthe city.
