For early cucumbers sow first of April in a hotbed upon pieces of sod (the grass side down), so that they can be readily transplanted to the open ground in rich soil when danger of frost Is over or protect by hand glasses. For early use, if the weather has become settled and warm, plant in hills about four feet apart each way; thin out to four of the strongest plants to each hill after all danger from insects is over; they succeed best In warm, moist, rich, loamy soil; continue planting at intervals for a succession. The cucumbers should be gathered when large enough for use, whether required or not; if left to ripen it de- stroys the productiveness.
