While engaged on this duty I had an excellent opportunity of witnessingthe movements of Farraguts fleet, and, by the aid of powerful night-glasses,I could almost distinguish persons on the vessels. The whole scene lookedlike a beautiful panorama. From almost perfect silence — the steamersmoving slowly through the water like phantom ships — one incessant roar ofheavy cannon commenced, the Confederate forts and gun-boats openingtogether on the head of our line as it came within range. The Union vesselsreturned the fire as they came up, and soon the guns of om fleet joinedin the thunder, which seemed to shake the very earth. A luri
