Dr Johnson on Action.* Whether action may not be of use in churches wherethe preacher addresses a mingled audience may deserveinquiry. It is certain that the senses are more powerful asthe reason is weaker, and that he whose ears convey littleto the mind may sometimes listen with his eyes, till truthtakes possession of his heart. If there be any use ofgesticulation in the pulpit, it must be applied to theignorant and rude, who will be more affected by vehemencethan delighted by propriety.—Rambler^.
