The Lombardswere great churchbuilders and theirarchitecture is main-ly confined to thatbranch. These churches combinedthe plan of the Ro-man basilica withthe cupola of the By-zantines, and cryptswere invariably added, and donated with saintlybones plundered or bought from the catacombs ofthe Eternal City.
