Mining safety research. Researcher carrying out a test in the 1970s at a test facility for the Safety in Mines Research Establishment (SMRE). The SMRE, formed in 1947, was part of the UK's Health and Safety Executive. It was one of three bodies that later merged in 1975 to form what in 1995 became the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). This photograph is part of a set compiled for the centenary of the Health and Safety Laboratory, which was founded in 1911 as the Home Office Experimental Station.
