Boats moored up as the sun sets over the Mekong river Louang Phabang Laos

This is the old capital of Laos and exudes remote tranquillity and casual grandeur. Situated in a slim valley shaded by green mountains and the Mekong and Khan rivers, this tiny mountain kingdom has been in existence for more than a thousand years and was designated a World Heritage Site in 1995. The Mekong is one of the world's major rivers. It is the 12th-longest in the world, and the 10th-largest by volume (discharging 475 km3 of water annually). It drains an area of 795,000 km2: From Tibet it runs through China's Yunnan province, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
